Corncrake Monitoring
International Corncrake Monitoring
Period: from 2001 to at least 2021

Supported by: BirdLife International Corncrake Conservation Team

Abstract:
The international Corncrake Monitoring Project aims at annual counts of calling males in the same sample areas. The selection of which sample areas should be included in the census is free, but they should at least be representative for the whole region where it is situated. The size of the sample areas should be not too small. Preferably they should have a size which can be counted during one night. Larger areas, which are counted by a group of ornithologists are even more welcomed, but keep in mind that it is important to have the same effort over the years, which might be more difficult when working together with many people in a large area. In some countries and regions, organisation might be enhanced by a regional co-ordinator who is familiar with the distribution of Corncrakes and who is also responsible for the selection of representative counting sites.
Data from previous years are welcomed as well. It is our aim to set up a European-wide database with Corncrake numbers, which includes data from occasional counts as well as the results of the standardised annual counts described above. We aim at an annual review of results on the homepage of the Corncrake Conservation Team.
