Projects:
Landesbund für Vogelschutz (LBV)
[Bavarian Society for Bird Conservation]
Research + Development Project "Evaluation of the contribution of national and international nature conservation projects in Germany for the protection of threatened birds on areas used extensively for agriculture (eg. corncrake): conflicting aims and solutions".

Period: 1 July 1997 until 31 December 2000

The project was funded by the Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature
Conservation and Nuclear Safety [Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Naturschutz
und Reaktorsicherheit (BMU)] and supervised by the Bundesamt für Naturschutz (BfN)

Over the three years special investigations were carried out in the
following German nature reserves:

  • the "Alte Sorge-Schleife" (Schleswig-Holstein),
  • the "Borgfelder Wümmeniederungen (Bremen),
  • the "Nationalpark Unteres Odertal" [National Park Lower Odra] (Brandenburg),
  • the "Schwarzachaue" (Bavaria)  and
  • the "Murnauer Moos" (Bavaria).
These have been targeted because of variations of population size, habitat use, ecology and behaviour of the corncrake and other meadow breeding birds. An essential advantage will be the comparison between different sites showing varying local conditions. Specific conservation requirements will also be analysed. The conflict of the aims between the protection of corncrakes and the protection of other meadow breeding birds as well as the conflict between corncrake and agriculture are the most important points. The results will be directly considered in the management plans of the sites. They will also be transferred to other sites important for corncrakes. Due to the selection of very different habitat types the chances of transferring the results from other sites is very possible.

In additional to this a country wide corncrake survey is being carried out..

Corncrake Survey in Germany
The Landesbund für Vogelschutz (LBV) [Bavarian Society for Bird Conservation] is co-ordinating a country wide corncrake survey in Germany. The first field season was spring/summer 1998. The project will be carried out over several successive years because of corncrake population changes.

The complete survey instructions are published:
