5th INTERNATIONAL CORNCRAKE WORKSHOP
The Netherlands 13-16 November 2007

We are pleased to invite you for the 5th International Corncrake Workshop, to be held in the Netherlands from 13-16 November 2007. The meeting is a follow-up of previous workshops in München, Bavaria (1989), Gdansk, Poland (1994), Freising, Bavaria (1995) and Hilpoltstein, Bavaria (1998). Discussions at these meetings played a major role in unravelling the complex breeding biology of Corncrakes and have been essential regarding conservation of the species. Since the last meeting in 1998, nearly 10 years have passed. Meanwhile, conservation schemes have been carried out in several countries, and research has been going on. Last year, an updated version of the global Species Action Plan was published.

The main aim of the meeting is to bring together conservationists and researchers in order to discuss the current strategies in conservation, latest results of research and current conservation status of the species. Even if Corncrakes have been globally downlisted as 'near threatened', the conservation status is still unfavourable, since many populations depend on agriculture and large parts of the core breeding areas are currently being abandoned by agriculture. We hope to receive contributions from all parts of the breeding range, both regarding experiences with conservation projects (e.g. carried out in LIFE framework) and results from research projects.

The meeting will be organised by Vogelbescherming Nederland (BirdLife Netherlands), the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB, BirdLife UK) and SOVON Vogelonderzoek Nederland (Dutch Centre of Field Ornithology).
